Avodart / Dutasteride

Hair loss is a common problem for both men and women. It is usually caused by a genetic trait that causes the hair follicles to degenerate and stop growing hair properly. There are several medications available over the counter and through a prescription to help treat and reverse hair loss.

Rogaine
Rogaine, or topical minoxidil, is probably one of the best known medications on the market today. Rogaine is a cream that helps reduce hair loss by stimulating the blood vessels that lead to the hair follicles. This stimulation causes the hair follicles to continue producing hair instead of degenerating. Possible side effects of Rogaine can include dizziness, irregular heartbeats, chest pain, and fainting. Rogaine can also create allergic reactions in some patients, including closing of the throat or difficulty in breathing. In general, Rogaine side effects are not common. The medication is used by rubbing it into the scalp where thinning of the hair is occurring.

Propecia
Propecia, or finasteride, is a hair loss medication that is designed to be used by men only. The active ingredient in Propecia prohibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT. The presence of a higher level of testosterone prompts the body to continue growing hair at a normal rate. Some patients who take Propecia experience allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing. Others may experience lightheadedness, tenderness of the breasts, impotence, and headaches. Propecia is taken in pill form, and patients usually begin to see results after about three months of regular use.

Avodart
Avodart, or dutasteride, is not marketed directly as a hair loss medication. Its original use was for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Avodart works in much the same way as Propecia by manipulating a man's hormones and blocking enzyme effects on testosterone levels. It has not been fully approved by the FDA for treating baldness, but research in South Korea on Avodart's effectiveness may prompt more studies in the United States. Some side effects of Avodart include impotence, problems with ejaculation, and breast tenderness. The medication is available by prescription in capsule form, but has not been released for use as a baldness treatment in the United States yet.
